SAS vs Caesar Rodney

Posted Tuesday, May 12, 2009 by Jay Hutchinson
: The Saints traveled to the state capital for a Saturday make-up game against Caesar Rodney.  The Middletowners knew they were in for a battle especially since the team had ended CR’s run in the state tournament last year.  After a back-and-forth first half, the Saints went into the locker room ahead 3 -2 feeling confident that they could muster more offense in the second half.
However, the Riders scored first to start the second half and then catapulted into the lead just 44 seconds later.  Sticking to their game plan the Saints were able to score the equalizer with 6 minutes to go in the third quarter on a beautiful unassisted goal by Taylor White.  The Riders got the first goal of the fourth quarter to go up 6 – 5 but the Saints tallied to tie the score at six on a Hugo Francis goal assisted by Taylor White who had ALL of the Saints’ assists on the day.  Once again, the Saints were stymied by a hot goalie as the Saints nearly doubled the Riders’ shots but were stopped 19 times by the CR goalie.  Unfortunately, the Saints were unable to capitalize on the many opportunities that they afforded themselves in the fourth quarter.  Wesley and Ben MacDonald  each had seven ground balls.  Ford Van Fossan also played an outstanding game with five ground balls and many gutsy clears
