SAS vs Tatnall Game 2 2009

Posted Tuesday, May 12, 2009 by Jay Hutchinson
The heartbreak kids lost a squeaker at Tatnall on Tuesday.  Arriving in Wilmington very early in order to maximize warmup and get in a session of “soft hands”, the Saints were chastised and ordered to get off the wall by a Tatnall faculty member.  Respectfully the Saints knocked off the ritual which has become the key to a tournament bid, but used this as an impetus to prepare even more aggressively on the new Bermuda grass field.  On a day when the Hornets would honor their seniors, the Saints welcomed the opportunity to play the spoiler to Tatnall’s players and fans.  Unfortunately, the effort which was monumental fell short as Tatnall closed out the regular season series with 2 wins.  This was enormously disappointing to players like senior co-captain, Alex Flynn, who won 6 of 8   faceoffs and played brilliant defense; to Taylor White who tied a school assist record with his 3 assists; to Ford Van Fossan, senior co-captain, who held his attackman to no goals  while making numerous clears; to Big Derin Akintilo, who repeatedly cleaned house took a shot to the groin and gave everything he had; and to JaiVon Wesley who despite being double teamed and pestered all day for being “all righthanded”, found a way to score twice beating a very “hot” goalie.  To be truthful, the Saints had the better of the play but the Tatnall goalie demonstrated why he is one of the best in the state making some ridiculous saves and literally standing on his head to keep Tatnall close.  At the end of the day, the score stood at 7 – 6 which means the Saints defense allowed half of the 14 goals that they surrendered in the first game of the home-and-home series. Will MacIntosh was fabulous making  16 saves as well as great outlet passes.  The offense was in the groove too recording 40 shots on goal, fifteen in the fourth quarter!  The junior defensive tandem of McDonald and Train were superb with Ben holding future All- State attackman, Fragomele, to two goals and Train showing why he is the top LSM in the state.
