SAS vs Friends

Posted Saturday, May 02, 2009 by Jay Huthinson
On a ninety degree Saturday, the Saints were able to fend off a very large and physically aggressive Friends team.  Once again, the Saints got off to a pretty good start and went up 3 to 2 on goals by Martin Milspaugh, Taylor White, and JaiVon Wesley.  Despite controlling the ground balls in the second quarter, the Saints allowed three tallies by the Quakers and found themselves down 4 -5 going into the second half.  It was Jordy Gowan’s score with nine seconds left in the third that allowed the Saints to pull even with Wilmington Friends going into the wild fourth quarter.  In a flurry, the Saints scored two more goals in less thirty seconds when Wesley found Cam McDonald in the slot for a pretty goal.  Then, Russell Train went “coast-to-coast” and shot on the Friends goalie to put the Saints up 8 – 6 with ten minutes to go on the clock. However, just six seconds later, Friends scored their 7th goal.  Following that they got the equalizer with just over five minutes left on the clock as they converted on an EMO opportunity.  Which was the only way that they were going to get goals on a day when the defensive corps of Van Fossan, Akintilo, McDonald, Gerstley, and Stabler as well as net minder, Will MacIntosh, were unusually stingy.  Remarkably, the defense held despite losing Alex  Flynn to a facial laceration that Trainer, Al Wood, described as one of the worst he had ever seen.

In O.T., Cam McDonald answered the call winning the face- off and getting the ball to senior attackman Taylor White.  Taking it behind, Taylor dodged his man and deftly placed a shot inside the foot of the Friends’ goalie. And the crowd went wild!
