SAS vs Middletown 2009

Although the offense sputtered a bit in this very exciting game, it was the defense that saved the day. Ben McDonald was spectacular scooping up ten ground balls while Ford Van Fossan had seven of his own. Captain Van Fossan literally dove and ran and made plays to preserve the narrow margin of victory for the Saints. Jai Wesley had eight ground balls of his own as well as a goal and an assist. In what was an epic struggle, the Saints were surprised to find themselves down at halftime by the score of 4 – 3. At halftime the Saints committed to sticking to their game plan on a day where the heat and a three game week were definitely taking their toll. All seemed to be well in Middle-ville when the Saints scored to tie the game three minutes into the second half. But Middletown stayed tough and scored their own four minutes later to go into the fourth quarter up 5 – 4. The Saints scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter and took the lead with 2:54 left in the game. Unfortunately, Middletown wanted to spoil St. Andrews’ long weekend and tallied with one and a half minutes left. After winning the faceoff, the Cavaliers ran down and nearly scored but Will Mac made a big time save low and away. Finally, the Saints were able to clear the ball after the defense converged on a Middletown middie and freed him from the ball. With just 14 seconds left and the score tied, the coaching staff took its’ second and last timeout to design the final play. AND, with just four ticks on the clock it was Taylor White connecting with Martin Milspaugh for their fourth goal of the day. What a contest! Next up is Tatnall, no question that the Saints will be sky high for this one!
